Nuevitas, 2025.- Commander in Chief Fidel Castro will always be remembered because he remains in every heart, especially in those who are passionate about his intransigence and personality.
In Nuevitas, a municipality located northeast of Camagüey, there are people whose hearts beat faster when they hear his name, and pride and nostalgia begin to fill their lives. Delis Hernández Rodríguez, a resident of the Primero de Mayo neighborhood, is one of them.
“I never saw him up close, but I embraced him in a dream, and to me it's like I really did because it was so real.
I was attracted by the way he spoke, the way he addressed people, the concern he maintained for Cubans and their struggle for freedom, and well-being throughout the world”.
Hernandez Rodriguez's admiration for Fidel arose from the time she met him through speeches in the mass media.
Tears were her most faithful companion after the sad news of the Commander's death, on November 25, 2016.
“I remember it was early in the morning and I was still sleeping when my son came and woke me up:
-Mom, Mom!
-What happened? I answered.
-Mom, Fidel died!
At first I didn't want to believe it, I felt a great pain.
She recalls that when she turned on the television, she saw the news.
“It was a pain that can only be compared to the loss of a loved one”.
Delis keeps the historical leader's thinking alive in her heart, and is in charge of transmitting his legacy to new generations.
“From the youngest to the oldest, I try to instill in them what I felt and feel to this day, for them to understand all the good things he did.
I still get excited when I see him on television, any word he said in a speech highlights his futuristic vision; you can be sure that everything he said was true”.
Delis Hernández Rodríguez tries to fill the emptiness she feels because of Fidel's absence and from Nuevitas she treasures the huge gratitude for the opportunities he conferred on Cubans.
