Dec, 2024.-“I am proud to have participated in that campaign, which was a success in Cuba,” said the Nuevitas resident, Brunilda Juana Sedeño Freytas, with a smile on her face.

“I taught literacy at the school belonging to the Número Uno neighborhood because my mother was ill and I could not leave the municipality. The students were very happy to learn to read and write, and when the process ended they received a certificate validating their skills.”

After that experience Brunilda dedicated her life to take care of her mother, when necessary she worked as a teacher in schools of Nuevitas and then she focused on the education of her descendants.

“I was the one who took my grandchildren to school and when they did their homework I corrected them on some details.”

At 86 years of age, Sedeño Freytas treasures the Literacy Medal among her most valuable belongings, and in her heart the satisfaction of contributing to the declaration of Cuba as the first Territory free of illiteracy in America on December 22, 1961.

“I don't have the youth anymore but if I had to do it over again, I would give my willingness to teach other people.”

We would like to acknowledge Brunilda Juana Sedeño Freytas and all those who, like her, shared their knowledge in this initiative of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro.
