August, 2024.- "I live here grateful for life", said María Elena Fernández, who resides in the Nursing Home in the municipality of Nuevitas, Camagüey.
"It was located on Narciso Lopez Street, where the elderly who were in the cays, Spanish citizens and others who wandered around were welcomed in the institution and received care services”, recalls María, precursor of the first health institution for the care of the elderly, in this riverbank.
In accordance with the priority given by the Cuban State to the care of this age group, in order to extend the service, "a new Nursing Home was created with 100 capacities for residents and 20 for daytime hours, and an initial staff of 29 workers.
It was inaugurated by Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz on February 27, 1987, who was dazzled by the grape bushes full of bunches of grapes at the entrance, and also toured the center to check every detail," added María Elena, excited as if she were living that moment once again.
"I worked 26 years here with various responsibilities until retirement and I've been a resident for nine years because I thought this was my house, this is my home!
The workers are to be admired - although the staff is not complete - thanks to the effort they make, they have never failed to attend to us properly," she said.
María Elena Fernández's experiences confirm the care she deserves for having given her love to past generations for more than two and a half decades.
