Nuevitas, 2024.- The Nuevitas Fishing Base Business Unit (UEB) has exports as one of its activities, an indicator that they plans to diversify in order to increase its contributions to the economy of the country and the entity.

Gerardo Izquierdo Rodríguez, head of Fishing Operations, specified that for this purpose they catch the conch, clean its mass and send it to The Industrial Fishing Company of Santa Cruz del Sur  (EPISUR), where it is processed and exported because it has a license for this activity.

The previous year closed with 96 percent compliance with the plan, a meritorious result considering that only 30 percent of the physical fuel was available - compared to the planned amount - and the bad weather in the month of December, causes that demanded greater effort from the staff.

The assignment should be restarted from October 2024 until April, with the benefit of having a high technical coefficient in the main vessels.

Likewise, they plan to gradually venture into lobster, cucumber and sea sponge exports, said Izquierdo Rodríguez.

In the case of lobster, they already have the allocation to capture three tons, a task that will begin in the first days of July, a species that, in addition to being shipped abroad, is demanded by the tourism sector in Cuba.

In coming days, specialists and biologists from the Base Economic Unit and EPISUR will travel to the areas where sea cucumbers and sea sponges are found, to study and propose the figures to be extracted without violating sustainable fishing standards.

As benefits of exports, Izquierdo Rodríguez recognized the collection of foreign currency for the national economy and the business group, and in the entity it makes possible the acquisition of raw materials to reduce the costs of added productions, equipment and spare parts for vessels.

He also considers that it is essential to sustain the industry after the conversion of the UEB Pesca Nuevitas as a Subsidiary Company on July 1st, a long-standing demand of the collective.

According to a publication on the official website of the Ministry of Economy and Planning, the legal director Ivonne Rodríguez Rodríguez, referred there is a need to bring decisions closer to the places where economic activities are generated, and it comes with greater autonomy in financial management and daily operations, the increase in efficiency in production cycles, the increase in volumes of goods and services created, the income and benefits for the worker, in the first instance, and also for the entity and the territory in which they are located.
