Nuevitas, Nov. 12.- Capacities for disaster risk reduction are strengthened in Nuevitas thanks to the implementation of the international Coastal Resilience project in district 27 of Santa Rita. This project allows local decision-makers to adopt accurate measures in the occurrence of hydrometeorological events and other natural phenomena.
The need to guarantee the flow and ebb of water in the community entrance road, improve the structural conditions of the houses in the area and the vitality of preserving the health of the mangrove as a protective barrier stand out among the actions to be implemented, as a result of the implementation of several studies on the vulnerabilities to which the area is exposed.
Such measures are essential to avoid the effects of climate change, and extreme hydrometeorological phenomena such as hurricanes and Scenarios of coastal flooding. Between 2050 and 2100, it is expected that more than six hectares of the town will be flooded.
Promoting environmental awareness and harmonious coexistence with coastal ecosystems is a priority for the international project in Santa Rita an initiative that contributes significantly to strengthening capacities for disaster risk reduction based on the execution of studies and the implementation of in operation of an Early Warning Point.
The national executors of Coastal Resilience are the Environment Agency and the National Risk Assessment Group, with the consent of financing from the Global Alliance for Climate Change of the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Program .
