Camagüey, Nov 4.- The recovery of beaches and other areas of the Camaguey coast, stands out among the actions to be developed in the short term to reduce the impact of climate change, as support in the Life Task or State Plan, for the confrontation to that environmental phenomenon.
Priority areas for this program are located in the northern part of the province, which range from Cayo Romano – almost adjacent to the Ciego de Ávila province bay to the Santa Lucía spa near the border with Las Tunas province, and where the main tourist pole of the region lies, a segment that covers almost all that coastline of the territory.
The rehabilitation of La Boca in Santa Lucia, Bonita beach in Cayo Sabinal, and Jigüey beach in the municipality of Esmeralda, is one of the vital tasks deployed by 2020, said Lisbet Font Vila, head of the Environment Unit of the delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) in Camagüey.
According to the current situation of the coastal processes, these marine ecosystems were evaluated with the categories of intense and purple erosion, he said, while explaining that the urban rearrangement of the Jigüey coastal settlement is planned, among the most threatened.
Other work carried out in that area involved the rehabilitation of networks and elimination of salideros, and the demolition and construction of 23 meters of adequate accesses at Bonita Beach, in addition to the hydrocarbon containment barrier in the Maritime Terminal of Nuevitas.
The specialist added that in Santa Lucia the dune improvement of the Gran Club Santa Lucia Hotel was completed, and the maintenance of the walkways in the Bravo Caracol tourist facility was undertaken, while in the areas of public use the actions have not started by lack of budget
In Florida Beach, located on the southern coast of the territory, the magnitude of erosive processes and total sand losses has been quantified, and the state of vegetation, especially mangrove, and terrestrial and marine fauna was evaluated.
Andrea Armas Rodríguez, delegate of CITMA in Camagüey, insisted on the need to redesign the objectives and work strategies for years to come, related to the State Plan for confronting climate change.
He also emphasized the importance of carrying out the conception of tasks from the conception of the municipal level, with a view to making the period between 2020 and 2030 more effective in terms of results.
The Life Task also contemplates the efficient use of water, territorial and urban planning, the increase in the perception of risk of the population, priorities in reforestation, and the conservation of coral reefs.
